Samik Bhattacharya cites journalist welfare and financial security concerns

Announcement adds to welfare-focused campaign ahead of West Bengal elections

Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, senior BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya has announced that if the party comes to power, eligible journalists in the state will receive a monthly allowance of ₹5,000. The announcement has added a new dimension to the ongoing election campaign, with parties increasingly focusing on welfare-linked promises targeting specific professional groups.

Bhattacharya stated that the proposed initiative is aimed at addressing financial challenges faced by working journalists. He alleged that under the current government, benefits and opportunities are restricted to a limited section, while the BJP’s approach would ensure fairness and transparency. He said that many journalists work under difficult economic conditions and require structured social support.

He further said that if the BJP forms the government, the allowance would be implemented in a transparent manner without discrimination. His remarks were interpreted as an attempt to directly reach out to the media community and highlight journalist welfare as part of the party’s governance agenda ahead of polling.

The announcement comes amid a broader political context where welfare schemes have become a central theme in electoral campaigning. Various states in India already provide pensions or financial assistance to journalists, and similar initiatives have been referenced by political parties in West Bengal to position their welfare models. Bhattacharya also criticised the current state government, claiming it has failed to deliver an effective administration, while asserting that the BJP aims to bring structural change in governance if elected.
