Padma Shri Prof. R M Vasagam, comments South Point High School on its project to launch a nano-satellite in Low Earth Orbit
Sk Mehfuz, Kolkata, July 4, 2023 : South Point School and South Point High School celebrated prize distribution day on their platinum Jubilee year today at the Science City auditorium.
On this occasion, the Chief Guest of the event, Padma Shri Prof. R M Vasagam, distinguished scientist and Vice-President of Indian Technology Congress Association, Said, South Point High School is amongst very few Schools pan-India and the only one in Eastern India which proposes to have a satellite of its own orbiting the earth along with a ground station in the school premises. The present and future students of the school will benefit immensely from such a progressive project".
Dr K Gopalakrishnan, Secretary General of Indian Technology Congress Association was the Guest of Honour for the evening.
Addressing the audience of more than 2000 students and their parents on the occasion, Shri Amol Chandra Chakraborty, senior Chartered Accountant and court-appointed Joint Administrator for the Estate of Smt. Priyamvada Birla, informed that the new priyamvada Birla campus of South Point is under construction at Mukundapur at a project cost in excess of 400 crores. He reiterated the commitment of the M P Birla group to the smooth completion of the project. He also announced that the expected schedule for opening of the new campus and relocating the existing students of the school, would begin by April 2025.
While welcoming the gathering, Smt. Rupa Sanyal Bhattacharjee, Principal of South Point High School stated that the Annual Day of South Point was being held at the Science City Auditorium after a gap of 4 years, due to the COVID pandemic. The day is celebrated every on the 4th of July, which is the birth anniversary of late Shri M P Birla, founder of the M P Birla Group. She mentioned that India's importance as a scientific power in the space field is taking centre stage in the days to come and the School expects to give students early access to the space technology through the launch of the satellite and establishing a space lab cum ground station at our school premises.
The audience gave a standing ovation to Judhajeet Ghosh of Class X, recipient of the Priyamvada Birla Bravehearts Award. Diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in 2018 - he was only 11 years old then - Judhajeet has taken all the struggles and the painful treatment procedures in his stride. With admirable will power, and after three-four years is happy and healthy, coping well academically also.
Prizes were given away on the occasion to students who had achieved academic brilliance. They received medals and cash prizes under the aegis of the "M P Birla Smarak Kosh" . Prizes were also handed over to children from other school who were the recipients of cheques and certificates for the inter school events, collectively called "Kalakosh" , on stage by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour.
It was then time for the two vibrant and meaningful presentation by more than 350 children. The student's of South Point School presented "Ek Divya Udaan - The Eternal Quest", signifying man's continuous strive for perfection, and the lessons he learns from history. The High School students presented "Ray-A Drop of Golden Son", a tribute to the legendary Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Characters penned by Ray came alive on stage. Both the presentation were highly appreciated by the audience.
The programme came to an end with the vote of thanks and the singing of the national anthem.
